Matthew 20:17-19 (NASB)

17  As Jesus was about to go up to Jerusalem, He took the twelve disciples aside by themselves, and on the way He said to them,

18  "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn Him to death,

19  and will hand Him over to the Gentiles to mock and scourge and crucify Him, and on the third day He will be raised up."

1.     Be Willing To Follow The Example Of Christ

Matthew 20:20-28 (NASB)

20  Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus with her sons, bowing down and making a request of Him.

21  And He said to her, "What do you wish?" She *said to Him, "Command that in Your kingdom these two sons of mine may sit one on Your right and one on Your left."

22  But Jesus answered, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?" They *said to Him, "We are able."

23  He *said to them, "My cup you shall drink; but to sit on My right and on My left, this is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by My Father."

24  And hearing this, the ten became indignant with the two brothers.

25  But Jesus called them to Himself and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them.

26  "It is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant,

27  and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave;

28  just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."

2.     Be Willing To Avoid Seeking Personal Honor In Christ’s Kingdom

John 13:1-5 (NASB)

1  Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that His hour had come that He would depart out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.

2  During supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him,

3  Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come forth from God and was going back to God,

4  *got up from supper, and *laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He girded Himself.

5  Then He *poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.

3.     Be Willing To Take On Unappealing Tasks To Help Others

John 13:6-15 (NASB)

6  So He *came to Simon Peter. He *said to Him, "Lord, do You wash my feet?"

7  Jesus answered and said to him, "What I do you do not realize now, but you will understand hereafter."

8  Peter *said to Him, "Never shall You wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me."

9  Simon Peter *said to Him, "Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head."

10  Jesus *said to him, "He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you."

11  For He knew the one who was betraying Him; for this reason He said, "Not all of you are clean."

12  So when He had washed their feet, and taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you?

13  "You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am.

14  "If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.

15  "For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you.

4.     Be Willing To Suffer & Sacrifice For Others

Matthew 26:20-30 (NASB)

20  Now when evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the twelve disciples.

21  As they were eating, He said, "Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me."

22  Being deeply grieved, they each one began to say to Him, "Surely not I, Lord?"

23  And He answered, "He who dipped his hand with Me in the bowl is the one who will betray Me.

24  "The Son of Man is to go, just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born."

25  And Judas, who was betraying Him, said, "Surely it is not I, Rabbi?" Jesus *said to him, "You have said it yourself."

26  While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, "Take, eat; this is My body."

27  And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you;

28  for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.

29  "But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father's kingdom."

30  After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

 5.     Be Willing To Love & Help Even Those Who Betray You

Lord’s Supper:

Remembering With Reverence

1 Corinthians 11:23-28 (NASB)

23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread;

24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me."

25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."

26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes.

27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord.

28 But a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
